Gateway in Budweis - gw

It is actually 2 routers in one box:-)

Configuration

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6 GHz (2C2T)@K9A Platinum

1GiB DDR2 533MHz RAM memory (2x 512MiB in dual-channel; not that it would make any difference if it weren't; also 100MiB would be plenty for the purpose)

2GB SSD (actually an SD card in microSD<->IDE adapter)

  • No GPU
  • No HDD
  • Semi-passive CPU cooling (passive under 55C core temp)

NICs

  1. RTL-8111B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (onboard, WAN 1Gbps)
  2. RTL-8110SC Gigabit Ethernet (onboard, LAN 1Gbps)
  3. RTL-8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (AIC, LAN 100Mbps for wireless AP)

Features

  • Running Debian 8
  • PPTP VPN pass-through
  • kernel parameters tuned up for routing performance and minimal latency
  • ingress firewall setup

TODOs

  • Apparently forgot to enable AMD Cool’n’Quiet in BIOS after CMOS battery dropped dead Enabled it now.
  • Downgrade and undervolt CPU (have one nice 4000+ handy)
  • Embed wireless module. Got one nice Microtic routerboard for 5G 802.11n. I imagine it being inside the box, so it would involve some cutting for the signal not to be shielded out.
